In some decks, this card is also labeled as The Pope. He is a priest, spiritual guru, or rabbi who guides people on their spiritual path. He is known for doing the right thing and following the commandments. He lives by the rules of his religion and his society, and advises others to do the same. He expects people to bow down to the teachings of religion, much like the two supplicants are portrayed doing in the card. He can be seen as being inflexible and unyielding and refuses to accept anything or anyone who deviates outside these norms set forth by the rules. Duty is the key word for the Hierophant.
