This card warns us about the excesses in life and the desire to give into our animal nature. On the other side, it also reminds us to guard against extremes of repression of natural desires and needs. Instead, it reminds us to learn balance in our lives. We are only restrained in bondage if we choose to be. Oftentimes we forget that we have a choice, much like the humans chained by the Devil in this card. The two humans are the same as those portrayed in The Lovers, only this time they are symbolized after the fall, when life becomes hard. They don't realize that they could take off their chains and walk away whenever they want.
